Band of Rain has been constantly changing over the years. As the songs
change so the personnel changed.
However the band's founder member and songwriter Chris Gill has found
a niche now that seems to suit everybody, and as such is now putting together
a new live band for 2005. There is also a new album being written and
recorded right now as a follow up to "Deep Space" recorded and
released in 2004.
The new album entitled " Aire on a Shoestring "is due for release
the early party of 2005 and some of the songs from this album as well
as a selection from Deep Space will be incorporated in to the live shows,
probably with two drummers.
Band of Rain have many influences, drawing from the 70s prog to 60s psychedelia
with main influences recognisable from Pink Floyd, Yes and Genesis. They
toured the U.S. in the late 70s and lived in Houston, Texas, spending
a lot of time playing with experimental bands. They played Stonehenge
and Bath Festivals, especially with people like Lol Coxhill, considered
by Chris the greatest sax player ever.
The band are always buying new instruments and they now have a full synthesiser
section that will take them in to slightly different areas but not pure
electronica. The mood is still definitely chilled.
Deep Space, the album currently on release here, is a collection of ideas
born from hours spent playing with experimental bands and musicians in
places as far apart as Texas and Germany. Some of the songs started off
in a completely different way to how they finished, due largely to the
fact that Chris allows influences to creep in and move, rather than trying
to block them out. This gives the music a kind of fluidity that will be
evident from the live shows.
Band of Rain do spend a lot of time in the studio trying out new ideas
and new ways to make music that comes from the heart and soul rather than
the head. This is probably why it touches so many people in so many different
ways, you kind of feel that maybe it was written for you.
Deep Space has some really nice moments, and will take you from the highest
mountains, out on to the ocean and in to a small room where time stands
still, all without leaving your favourite chair. So if you want to take
a long trip without actually moving , Deep Space is an excellent departure
point.
Chris's dream bands are Gong & Ozrics, Chris's favourite colour is
a deep spacey shade of the unknown.
